Driving the Norwegian Scenic Route Gamle Strynefjellsvegen

The Gamle Strynefjellsvegen is my favorite Norwegian Scenic Route, not because it is more stunning than the others, but because we were able to spend more time on this route without actually rushing into anything. We simply had more time to linger and appreciate its beauty! […]

Driving the Norwegian Scenic Route Sognefjellet

Few days before our flight and after i finalized our itinerary, HB sent me a message saying “WE HAVE DO THIS!” referring to hiking the highest peak in Scandinavia, the Galdhøpiggen mountain. This was his only request on this trip, so i wasn’t able to […]

When in Cebu City – Visit Temple of Leah

My interest in visiting this temple isn’t quite high because I’ve already seen similar temples when i visited Rome, temples which are built out of classical Roman architecture. But my sister convinced me to drop by and it turned out to be a good decision. […]

The Niagara Wine Trail

The Niagara Wine Trail

“Where the soil, the slope, the sunshine, the warmth, the rainfall and the craftsmanship all matter. Together, they give us better grapes. And better grapes give us better wine.” – VQA

Ontario has three primary grape-growing regions, where the soil and climate create unique growing conditions:

  • Lake Erie North Shore
  • Niagara Peninsula (regional appellations: Niagara-on-the-Lake and Niagara Escarpment)
  • Prince Edward County

I got the chance to tour the Niagara Peninsula for two days during the labor day weekend and visited various wineries. I would suggest to pick three to five popular and award-winning wineries to visit as a starting point. You will then pass by a number of wineries along the way, then you can choose to make a stop, some wineries will really surprise you, even though they don’t appear on any best list out there. I visited around 15 wineries in two days, i had the wine tasting at Chateau des Charmes and i had lunch at Strewn and i bought a bottle of wine to enjoy at home from Strewn too. I would not make a review of the character and taste of the wines i tasted since they all taste the same for me, but there are wineries which i considered really special because of the design, aesthetics, charm, and the overall relaxing and welcoming feel.

Wineries:

Chateau des Charmes – founded by a French winegrower, it is family estate winery which is set among 35 hectares of pristine vines, surrounded by romantic rose gardens, set against the backdrop of the Niagara Escarpment, which makes it the perfect setting for celebrations of all kinds.

Location: 1025 York Rd, St. Davids, ON L0S 1P0, Canada

At the tasting bar – great selection of wine at a minimal price (C$1-2) – 4 selection with a complimentary tasting of Rosé.

Strewn Winery – the winery offers a tasting room, wine boutique, OLiV restaurant and Wine Country Cooking School.

The OLiV restaurant offers delicious food and the menus make use of the many varieties of OLiV’s signature extra virgin olive oil (EVO) and true balsamic vinegar in each dish.

  • Light-filled 65 seat restaurant overlooking Four Mile Creek
  • Patio for al fresco summer dining
  • Delicious seasonal menus
  • Available for private group functions
  • Retail store and complimentary EVO and balsamic tastings

Ravine Vineyard – a family farm which is home to organic vineyards and winery with streetscape concept, award-winning culinary experiences, sprawling kitchen garden and grocery, distinctive event venues and community gatherings with 34 acres of beautiful rolling vineyard in the historic village of St. Davids, Ontario.

Vineland Estates Winery – picturesque venue, extensive vineyards on the bench of the Niagara Escarpment provide the stunning backdrop to a unique cluster of carefully restored historic buildings: Landmark stone tower stands proudly over a former Mennonite homestead with structures that date back to the 1840s, the former farmhouse, now The Restaurant with its panoramic views of the vineyards; the century barn that houses the retail store and wine tasting bar under soaring wood beams; and the charming stone Carriage House, with its intimate surroundings for private events.
